When was the last time you cried?

A toughy… I’m not really sure. I guess it’s been a while. Maybe the last time I watched the final episode of Babylon 5? Ok, that’s a little geeky but generally really emotional writing about loss gets me, and B5 was probably the last thing I watched in that vein. The main character knows that he’s about to die, brings all his comrades together for one last night of remembrance, spends a final day with his wife and then takes his spaceship and disappears. My summary really doesn’t do it justice - it’s very poignant, if set in a very sci-fi geek context.

Chips and cheese or a kebab after a night out?

The whole lactose intolerance thing pretty much rule out chips and cheese unfortunately. Haggis supper is a frequent choice (in terms of number I get vs number of nights out - still talking one every couple of months).

However, I’m partial to a good kebab even without the associated night out, its just that the only decent kebab place in my town involves walking from the pub, past the fish & chip shops, past my flat and a block further on. Much easier to decide to get one as a proper evening meal one night and get it delivered :P

Where do you think you’ll be in 10 years time?

I have no idea. I’d probably settle for “somewhere on the planet, preferably breathing”, but that’s not a particularly complete answer.

I’d really like in ten years to be properly settled. I’ll be 36 by then so I’d like to have a family, and preferably a job I don’t despise. Outside of that, I have no idea. I might still be in academia, but I might be back in industry. Ultimately, I’m going to take what comes along and is the best move for me. It would be supernice to think that by then I’ll have made a name for myself doing this AI thing and be doing whatever I want to, but that’s maybe not so realistic.

Is romance dead?

“It’s just a flesh wound!”

I’m maybe not the best person to ask about this, my concept of romance still being in the “fling sand in her eye and pull her hair” vein, but I think it’s definitely in trouble. We’re in an age where a slurred pickup line is a primary method for initiating a relationship, and at the same time everyone is paranoid about STDs, getting rolled or accused of rape. This does not make for an atmosphere conducive to romance and courtship. It is definitely the case that the “art of romance” and romance as a social convention is out of favour at the moment. When was the last time anyone heard of a guy writing a girl a poem or a song, or even standing outside her window with a boombox. Winning the girl’s heart has turned into something ancillary to hooking up at the end of a drunken night on the town, which is a real problem given most of my nights are spent neither drunk nor out on the town.

Maybe it’s a cyclic thing and the romance will return. Maybe it’s just a fact of the modern era that people want to cut through the bullshit and get to the point, but either way it’s a shame.

Are we alone in the universe?

On our planet alone the diversity of life we can find is immense. Extremophiles have only just been discovered in the past 20 or 30 years which has pushed back our knowledge of the limits of what life as we know it can tolerate. Based on this, the question becomes “Is it likely that given the diversity of life we have found ourselves, our planet is the only one in the entire universe that has the conditions suitable to produce life?”. Just based on the statistics, the answer has to be “not likely”.

So, no I don’t believe we are alone in the universe. It’s a hell of a big place though so I don’t know that we’ll ever prove it either way.

After an apocalyptic event, pockets of humanity emerge, banding together to maintain some semblance of order. If we are classified by our skills in this technologically barren wasteland to aid our new community, what is the talent or skill you provide?

Firstly, I’d question the validity of an assumption that apocalypse => loss of technology. Mankind will still have the ability to cobble things together and jury-rig inventions, so I don’t believe it’s the case that my primary skillset of “tech” would be useless in this world.

However, let’s accept the premise, aside from my ability with electronics and devices, I’ve got a fair few tricks up my sleeve to contribute to society. First and foremost, I’d like to think that my wisdom and overall intelligence would be of use in a community elder / shaman kind of role. From all the time I’ve spent maintaining my boat, I’m sort of capable at woodworking and that sort of thing, and of course in the case of a coast-based society, or a Waterworld style ocean-bound one, I’m a fairly able sailor.

Overall I feel I have a lot to offer this kind of society, but I doubt I’d be one of the few survivors who made it.

Spirits or beer?

Typically beer but I really don’t enjoy the way it makes me pee all the damned time. Seriously, if I’m out drinking beer, I’ll be up and down every ten of fifteen minutes. Its ridiculous!

So instead I sometimes get spirits. But then I mix them with Coke which sort of defeats the purpose…

If you could choose a superhero power, what would it be?

I have enough pressure in my life just being me. I don’t know that I could cope with having any sort of super-human ability that I’d feel compelled to put to work for the good of mankind. Gun to my head, I’d probably want to have something utilitarian and not massively flashy (gun to my head, I’d actually like a bullet proof skull…), something like Wolverine’s healing power - not visible externally, but gives you a significant edge in life.

Of course, the comedy answer is I’d like to be all rubbery like Mr Fantastic because a guy that flexible must be able to _really_ please a woman :P

Would you bake me a cake for my birthday?

Of course I would. I really enjoy baking and experimenting in the kitchen, so it would be a good opportunity. Of course, since these questions are posted anonymously, figuring out how to ship it to you might be a bit hard, so I’ll probably just east it on your behalf and post somewhere about how good it was. There may even be photos.
